As I shared in my video here, one of the more important aspects of leadership is helping others grow. But growth and development starts with ourselves. And contributing a chapter to the new book Change Your Life Through the Power of HOW was a fun learning and growth experience for me!

Training for Gold: Transform Yourself and Your Team with Intentional Development

When you invest in your own growth and in your team’s, you’re building the capability, confidence, and resilience your business can rely on when things get hard. You don’t win Olympic gold by accident—and you don’t build a high‑performing team by hoping people “figure it out” on their own. Every elite athlete has a clear development plan, a coach who sees their potential, and a training environment designed for growth. In organizations, development plays the same role: it’s the disciplined, ongoing work that turns raw talent into reliable performance.

The opposite is also true. When development is vague, ad hoc, or left entirely up to individuals, even your best people plateau. They stop feeling stretched, stop seeing a future with you, and eventually start looking elsewhere. You don’t need a bigger budget or a corporate university to change that. You need clarity and commitment: clarity about what skills and behaviors truly matter for the future and a commitment to build them intentionally.

You don’t have to be an Olympic coach to rouse your team to victory. But you do need to understand the impact you have on whether your employees flourish or languish. It starts with you. Like the reminder to put your oxygen mask on first before helping others.

Good people stay because they’re engaged. They remain engaged through motivation, commitment, challenge, and a sense of purpose. And much of that comes from meaningful, ongoing development. It’s the oxygen we all need to thrive.

If you’re serious about creating an Olympic‑caliber culture of growth, start by getting an honest read on where you are today.
